What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that affects the nerves of the body, causing symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and weakness. It is a disorder that arises due to damage or dysfunction in the nerves, which can be caused by a variety of underlying conditions, such as diabetes, infections, autoimmune disorders, alcoholism, and certain medications.
The damage can occur in the peripheral nerves, which connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, or in the autonomic nerves, which control involuntary bodily functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, and digestion.
There are many factors involved to successfully treating neuropathy:
- The underlying cause of nerve damage needs to be identified.
- The severity of nerve damage needs to be assessed.
- The types of nerve fibers that are damaged must be determined. There are two types of nerve fibers – sensory nerves (small fiber nerves and large diameter nerves) and motor nerves (responsible for muscle movement). Note that if muscle weakness due to neuropathy lasts for over two years, the damage to muscles is likely to be permanent.
- The amount of treatment required by the nerves needs to be evaluated. This depends on the extent of nerve damage and the types of fibers affected.
Neuropathy Treatment
- It aims to optimize the body’s environment for nerve healing.
- It seeks to increase blood flow to the nerves.
- It stimulates damaged nerves (small fiber, large diameter, or motor nerves) to reduce pain and improve balance.
- It aims to decrease brain-based pain.
